If you’re looking for general contractors, Virginia has plenty of options.  However, when it comes to selecting the right one to handle your project, it just makes sense to be a little picky.  For that reason, we invite you to consider all the reasons to choose Criner as your contractor.

Here are just a few:

  • Criner Remodeling has been in business continuously since 1977. Our owner, Robert Criner, has been working in the building trades since 1972.  That means we have more than 45 years of experience providing people in the Commonwealth with superior-quality work at reasonable prices.
  • Criner is a Class-A licensed contractor in Virginia and each of the peninsula’s municipalities. That means we can handle projects of any size, from basic remodeling to major home additions.
  • Criner has been certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as lead-free renovators. Of all the general contractors Virginia has, less than 3% possess this credential.  This enables us to work safely in lead-contaminated homes, most of which were built before 1978.
  • Both Robert Criner and company production manager Terry Thomas are certified aging-in-place specialists. This means that they have thorough knowledge of how to renovate and remodel homes to that elderly and physically challenged persons can live in them safely, comfortably, and with their independence intact.
  • In 2008, Robert Criner became the first remodeler in the country to receive Graduate Master Remodeler status from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). This is a testament to his knowledge and to Criner’s commitment to ongoing training and education for all its employees.
  • In 2009, Criner Remodeling received the National Master Design Award for its outstanding project designs and construction methods.
  • Remodeling Magazine, the nation’s biggest trade publication for the remodeling field, recently named Robert Criner as one of its “big 50” for the excellence Criner Remodeling shows in craftsmanship, design, and conducting business.
  • Robert Criner is the only person to be named “remodeler of the year” four times by the Peninsula Remodelers Council.
  • Robert Criner has completed all requirements to receive NAHB’s Certified Green Professional (GCP) credential. This gives Criner Remodeling the knowledge and skills to fully integrate green building materials and practices into its projects.
  • Criner Remodeling has served hundreds of happy customers during its time in business. Many of them have chosen to give testimonials about how happy they are with Criner’s professionalism and commitment to excellence.  You can read their comments

Steps in the Remodeling Process

  1. The first step is a telephone conversation with a Criner employee.  During this phase, we create a lead sheet that lists the client’s name, address, phone number, and preliminary details about the project.
  2. Robert Criner receives this sheet next.  He goes over it before calling the customer to set up a time to visit the site.
  3. During his visit, Robert will talk with the client to get a feel for his or her needs, make suggestions of his own, and provide a ballpark estimate for the job’s completion.
  4. If the customer wants to proceed, then he or she will sign a design agreement with Criner Remodeling to have designs created for the project.  The fee will vary depending on the nature of the job, but will never exceed 2% of the project’s total cost.
  5. Over the next few weeks, Criner will put together drawings and a 3-D model of what the finished project will look like.  After this is complete, the customer will visit the office to look the plans over and to have questions answered.
  6. Another meeting will be held to look at the finalized plans and to sign the building agreement. After this meeting, Criner Remodeling will place the customer’s project on its work schedule. Completion time will depend on many factors, such as complexity of the work and Criner’s current workload.

We hope that gives you an idea of what it’s like to have Criner as your home remodeling company.  Give us a call if we can answer any questions or to schedule an appointment for an estimate.
