Want to know how to design a kitchen — no matter its size, shape, or style? There are typically four tenets we tell clients to go by, ones to ensure that the beautiful end-product serves the homeowner’s needs, increases their home value, and does so without interrupting their life (or bank account) too immensely.
Here they are:
Know your priorities.
Do you need storage space? Counters to prep on? Plenty of seating for your 10 kids? Make a checklist of your priorities, starting with your biggest, most important one. Design all other elements around that and move down the list from there.
Work backward from the larger items.
You know you need a spot for your fridge, dishwasher, oven, sink, and microwave, so start by laying those out first. You want to make sure you have plenty of room to move around and use each item too, so take that into consideration when designing. Once you have those positions set, begin on smaller items like cabinets, shelving, and pot racks.
Be smart about processes and products.
If you don’t need to completely replace your cabinets, don’t waste money doing so. Use your budget to re-face them instead, and free up dollars for other elements of your project that could up its value. Use your budget efficiently and carefully and really think through what’s worth the investment and what’s just not going to deliver in the end.
Use a pro.
The single best thing you can do for any kitchen design is to hire a professional. Not only do they have the knowledge and expertise necessary to make your project a success, but they’ve quite likely had a project just like yours before — and that will save you time, money, and hassle in the long run.
