At Criner Remodeling, we don’t just focus on creating beautiful homes; we also believe in advocating for the home building and remodeling industry. Our commitment to the communities we serve goes beyond the projects we complete—we are dedicated to ensuring the voices of local builders and remodelers are heard on a national scale.

For years, Robert Criner and members of our team have been actively involved with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), an organization that works tirelessly to represent builders like us in Washington, D.C., and beyond. Through our involvement with NAHB, we’ve had the opportunity to participate in important conversations with lawmakers, making several trips to Capitol Hill to discuss the challenges and opportunities within our industry.

Advocacy is critical in ensuring well-intentioned laws and regulations don’t negatively impact housing affordability. One of NAHB’s top priorities is addressing the unintended consequences of energy codes on home prices. While promoting energy efficiency is important, some mandates can significantly increase building costs, making homes less affordable for many buyers. NAHB collaborates with legislators to ensure these policies balance sustainability with affordability.

For example, NAHB is actively advocating against costly energy efficiency standards, such as those outlined in H.J. Res. 170, which could drive up the cost of new homes financed by HUD and USDA. They also encourage state and local governments to pursue funding through the infrastructure bill rather than the Inflation Reduction Act, which mandates compliance with stricter, costlier energy codes like the 2021 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC). Through these efforts, NAHB ensures that regulations support both environmental goals and housing affordability.

Without voices like ours—and the collective voice of the NAHB and other organizations—lawmakers may not fully understand how regulations affect local builders and the communities we serve. This is why advocacy efforts are so important, as they provide real-world insights and expertise that can shape more effective legislation.

As a proud member of NAHB and a family-owned business serving the Hampton Roads community for over 45 years, Criner Remodeling is honored to be an advocate for our industry. We believe that by being actively engaged, we not only improve our own business but also create a positive ripple effect throughout the home building community.
